Today’s Totally Random Lines

Pardon, sir; I have heard the word. Phrase call you it? By this good day, I know not the phrase; but I will maintain the word with my sword to be a soldier-like word, and a word of exceeding good command by Heaven.

Bardolf

King Henry the Fourth Part II    Act III Scene ii, Line 78

This little back and forth between Shallow and Bardolf centers on the word accommodate, which apparently has some significant meaning in sixteenth century parlance.

Okay, here’s the part where you proclaim, ‘see, this stuff is crazy. How am I supposed to understand what they’re talking about here.’ Well, I suppose you raise a somewhat valid point, and I'm afraid I just don't feel like arguing today. So we'll leave it at that.

No Mojo, I' not going to argue with you either, and I'm certainly not going to 'accommodate' you with a light. I told you yesterday, NO LIGHT! And by the way, I know that's not even a real cigar you've got there. I don't know who you think you're kidding.

Today’s Totally Random Lines

Alas, what joy shall noble Talbot have

To bid his young son welcome to his grave?

Duke of York

King Henry the Sixth Part I    Act V Scene iii, Line 40

That’s right, Old Talbot and his son, Young Talbot, were both killed in the day's most recent fighting. Sir William had just commented that Old Talbot had not seen his son in the past seven years, and that prompted York's comment above. Amen to that, brother.

It's funny, we were just discussing this morning, in reference to current day world news, how much suffering war is still bringing about all over the world. Some things never change. Will they ever?

What the... NO, I do not have a light for your 'cigarillo'.

Where does this guy come up with this stuff?

Today’s Totally Random Lines

Now see what good turns eyes for eyes have done:

Mine eyes have drawn thy shape, and thine for me

Are windows to my breast, where-through the sun

Delights to peep, to gaze therein on thee:

Sonnet 24               Third Quatrain

The eyes have it! Today we have a sonnet about eyes. I had thought to give you the whole sonnet, but after reading it again I’ve decided that these four lines are the best anyway, so let’s just stick with them. The first two quatrains just talk about the eyes being the artist that paints a portrait of you that hangs in his heart. Then after today’s four random lines about what the eyes can do, he finishes with the two line conclusion about the limitations of eyes:

Yet eyes this cunning want to grace their art,

They draw but what they see, know not the heart.

So, to sum it up, I repeat, the eyes have it. Or do they?

Eyes.
