What This Blog Is About

Every day I pull a totally random line from Shakespeare to start my day with. When I started this blog I was posting those lines every day and writing a little bit about them. Lately I've been a bit busier so that I don't get around to posting to the blog on a daily basis, but I'm still pulling a line every day and posting to the blog as often as I can.

Some days I look at the pure language, and some days at the play or the poem that the line comes from, or the time or place it's set in. Sometimes I look at the relevance of the line to our world today, sometimes I just take off and to see wherever else the line might lead me. But whatever, whether analyzing, or contextualizing, or maybe even modernizing, one way or the other I tried to have some fun with it. After all, based on the writings he left behind, Will seems like he was a pretty fun guy.

The source is a modern compilation, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, The Shakespeare Head Press Edition. And it is complete, including Will’s poems and sonnets. I roll a die each day to reach a random page and random line in the book. For the most part, when picking out these lines I try to take complete sentences or thoughts, even if it means spanning two or more lines.

I listed all of Will's plays and poems on the 'Blog Posts Sorted by Will's Works' tab. Next to each play or poem I listed the date of any posts and these dates link to those posts.

There are 1,252 pages in the compilation I’m using, with over 100 lines per page, so that works out to about 342 years of material. My guess is that I won't be running out of material any time soon.

UPDATE, May 5, 2024: Actually, two updates. As of April 17 I have added my friend Mojo to the blog in an effort to make it more interesting. You be the judge. As of May 1 I have retired. How that will affect this blog, if at all, remains to be seen.
